Pep Rally T-Shirt Cannon

Turn a school assembly into the moment the back row actually looks up for.

For student councils, activities directors, coaches and anyone who has to make a school assembly actually land.

Pep rallies are hard. The energy has to be manufactured in a room full of teenagers who have already decided how the day is going to go, and the usual toolkit — a microphone, a spirit chant, a slideshow — has been used on them for years. A shirt launch cuts through that. It is the one moment in the assembly where every single person in the gym is watching the same thing, and where the back row suddenly has a reason to care.

Designing the rally around one moment

Do not treat the launcher as a garnish at the end. Build the assembly so the launch is the payoff:

  • Open the countdown early. Announce that shirts are going into the stands at a named moment so anticipation does the work for you.
  • Give the sections something to compete for. Launching into the loudest section, or running one launch per class, converts cheering into a contest.
  • Use it to crown something. Spirit week winners, the senior class, the team heading into a big game, or a staff member being serenaded. The launcher is the punctuation mark.

Making it fit a school gym

School gyms are actually a good venue for this. The seating is a slope, the ceiling is high, and the crowd is in one place with their eyes up. The practical considerations are simple:

Pick the right firing position

Usually the centre of the floor or a stage edge, with the crowd in front of you and a clear line of fire. You want a path with nothing in it and nobody standing in it.

Brief the operator and keep one

One adult, practised, with the unit in their hands the whole time. Students can design the moment; the launcher stays with staff.

Keep the crowd seated or in marked areas

The safest assemblies have the crowd in known positions. Launch into a section, not into a crowd that is milling around.

Agree the rules with your site leadership beforehand

Bring the unit to your administration before the assembly rather than surprising them with it. You want their sign-off in writing, not a raised eyebrow on stage.

What it does for school spirit

The intangible benefit is attendance. A rally that people talk about on the way home is a rally that gets attended next quarter. Spirit weeks, homecoming, senior nights and season openers all benefit from one reliable "something is going to happen" moment, and the launcher is that moment in a way that a slide deck never is.

Safety for a school environment

Inspect the unit before the assembly. Use soft projectiles only — rolled shirts, hats, foam fingers — and never anything hard, sharp or improvised. Keep the muzzle pointed somewhere safe even when you are not firing, and stop if anyone walks into the firing path. Adult operation only, and adult supervision of the assembly as a whole. The full guidance to hand your operator is on the Safety & Use page.

School rally questions

Can we use it inside a school gym?

Many schools do exactly that. Whether your gym is suitable is a decision for your site leadership — check ceiling height, the crowd layout and any district rules first, then practise before the assembly.

Is it safe for a student assembly?

It is an air-powered launcher, so it needs a trained adult operator, a clear line of fire and soft projectiles only. Run it the way you would run any equipment in a school: briefed operator, inspected unit, laid-out rules, and a staff spotter. Our Safety & Use guidance covers the operating points to hand to your operator.

Who should fire it?

An adult staff member or coach — not a student. If a class is involved, let them design the section and the chants while a staff member runs the launcher.

Will it work in a spirit assembly with a stage?

A stage gives you elevation and a clean line of fire over seated students, which usually makes for a controlled setup. Have the crowd seated or in clear standing sections, and fire away from the stage edge and any AV rigging.

How many shirts do we need?

More than you plan to launch. A rally with a hundred students looking upward will want more than one shirt, and the second launch is what makes the event feel like an event.
